Did Oppo just Out Apple, Apple with R9s?
Oppo R9s vs iPhone 7 plus http://www.mobilegeeks.com http://www.mobilegeeks.com OPPO has been creating Apple inspired handsets for years, their blatant homage to Cupertino has always resulted in well built handsets would often be half or 2 3rds the price with a few compromises. Upon taking the R9s out of the box it has the same solid build quality that we expect from Oppo, remember these were they guys that showed their phones hammering nails and opening walnuts a few years ago, but for a phone that’s going after the iPhone 7 Plus they killed Apple in terms of design! Both sport 5.5 inch display’s that look great, but the R9s is so much smaller and more compact, it’s only .7mm thinner, but pair that with a 40 gram drop in weight a narrower and shorter frame and over all the phone just feels like it’s got better build quality. But where Oppo out Appled Apple is on the six string antenna design on the back, this is the first time that I’ve seen a company so elegantly hide the antenna lines on an all metal phone. The iPhone 7 Plus almost looks like a childish attempt at a smartphone in comparison. Which is shocking because Apple has long been the king of design. Reducing the size of bezels is always a good thing, who doesn’t want larger screens in more compact bodies? Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix in China which is a bezeless smartphone. Maximizing screen real estate introduces a lot of problems and it seems like Chinese smartphone makers are collectively putting Apple on notice.
Ok, so before you tear my apart in the comments, yes the Mi Mix is a concept phone that is only being released in limited number in China, and the R9s does have problem although camera isn’t really one of them, yes it doesn’t have 2 lenses, but the quality is in the same ballpark as the iPhone 7 Plus which says a lot. But the R9s has one fatal flaw they went with a Snapdragon 625 processor which does feel a little slow. At times there was a pause before an app opened and multitasking was fine but not what we’re used to on flagship smartphones. Having said that colorOS is greatly improved and now comes with native search! It literally breaks my heart that Oppo didn’t put a Snapdragon 820 or 821 in this bad boy. If Apple had come out with this Six string antenna design the internet would have had a melt down, instead we’ll have to wait for Apple to steal this idea for the iPhone 8 for the internet to break the internet, because by then everyone will have forgotten that Oppo did it first.
